Infrastructure for Fusion Research
Over decades, UC San Diego has developed a world-class infrastructure for research in fusion science and engineering. The capabilities allow for a broad range of research with emphasis on:
- Laser facilities and diagnostics for fusion
- Fusion materials fabrication
- Fusion materials testing
- Pulsed power for inertial fusion
- Data science and supercomputing for fusion
$100 Million in Existing Infrastructure
The infrastructure for fusion research at UC San Diego represents an asset unique to San Diego, California and the United States. The infrastructure encompasses facilities that would cost more than $100 Million to replicate.
Importantly, these facilities are available for fusion research right now — for work with public-sector partners (state, federal) and with private-sector fusion companies. The researchers in Fusion Engineering Institute (FEI) that operate the facilities have decades of research experience and serve as highly-valuable collaborators.
